Living Systems

Adding a living system to your property will give your a variety of different natural and valuable products, depending on which one you choose.  Residential Ecology can install a system on your property no matter what kind of space you have.  A full scale aquaponics system can be added to larger properties for endless production.  If you live in an apartment we can install a worm bin that will feed on your food scrapes (reducing your waste) and even come to check on your worms to make sure they are happy and healthy.

Here is a list of the systems we specialize in.  But if you have another living system in mind that is not listed here, contact us and we will work with whatever you have in mind.

Want more information about one of these living systems and what they can do?  Please contact us at Residential Ecology for a full explanation of each system.

Rain Gardens

As rain falls it weaves its way down over our yards, into the streams, through the lakes and finally into the ocean. Although there are many paths to get there, water which moves along the top of the soil (overland flow) can carry away lots of nutrients, soil and sediment. If not managed, this natural process can cause soil erosion, nutrient depletion and pollute our bodies of water.

Rain gardens create a natural buffer zone that captures runoff before it washes downstream. Native plants filter out excess nutrients before the water drains through the soil ultimately recharging the groundwater (the main source of our drinking water). Because of their natural design which includes many elements of an ecosystem, rain gardens attract many birds and other wildlife. Rain gardens are perfect for a low area in your yard, in areas that generally feel a little bit soggy, or even in a heavily muddy part of your yard. Residential Ecology will install a working rain garden on your property that is functional for the environment as well as pleasing to the senses. Adding a rain garden to your landscape will truly connect you to the natural processes going on around you.

Lighting

Just because the sun goes down doesn’t mean we have to stop enjoying the great outdoors! Adding lights will allow you to enjoy your landscape even during the dark times of the day. A subtle light here to brighten up a path or perhaps illuminating some of your favorite plants there will truly make your outdoors come to life. Lighting will also add the element of safety to your landscape as it protects against falls and intruders. Residential Ecology will set you up with a lighting system that is specifically designed for your area and happiness. We specialize in solar light sources to harness the power of our natural environment.

Irrigation
Residential Ecology will install an irrigation system that fulfills your plant’s water needs no matter what the season.  Any irrigation installations also include an overlook of your entire growing space to identify any areas that may be losing excess water.

Slope Grading

Residential ecology will correct the angles of your slopes to minimize soil loss, provide access to closed off parts of your landscape and / or prepare an area for optimal plant growth. We recommend adding additional ground-cover plants in the area after changing the slope to stabilize the new grade of your landscape.

Lawn and Garden Care

We provide general maintenance of your landscape. This can include mowing, edging, brush cutting, hedge trimming, brush removal and other basic lawn care tasks. We have unique recommendations for each of these services that will provide benefits to your environment. For example, when mowing a lawn that is not too overburden with water, we recommend leaving the trimmings (mulch) evenly dispersed on the lawn in order to regenerate the soil and retain moisture. Even while performing normal maintenance tasks, Residential Ecology will keep in mind the ecosystem that is at play and strive to enhance it to its full potential.
